Your Annual Return Is Not The Only Tax Clock
The product, the service or the health plan can create a tax obligation that lives outside the annual income tax return. Identify the activity—and the deadline that goes with it.
Form 720 reports specified federal excise taxes and fees. The return may be quarterly, but deposit schedules and special annual fees follow their own rules.
The initial consultation is free. No purchase required. Return preparation and planning are separately engaged.

The IRS tax number identifies the reporting category.
Some payments are due before the quarterly return.
A PCORI-only filer generally reports once a year.
The Questions Behind The Return
Fuel, communications, air transportation and indoor tanning can raise different federal excise questions. Establish the taxable activity, responsible party and supporting records before selecting a line or rate.
Connect transaction detail, applicable exemptions, tax collected and deposits. An income tax estimate or state sales-tax payment does not automatically pay a federal excise liability.
Applicable self-insured health plans can bring the plan sponsor into PCORI reporting. The plan type, year and covered lives matter. Identify who is responsible rather than assuming the insurance company handles every plan.
A Hypothetical Employer’s Question
An employer sponsors an applicable self-insured health plan. Its Form 720 question may concern the patient-centered outcomes research fee rather than a fuel or transportation tax.
A filer with only that fee generally reports and pays it annually on the second-quarter return, rather than filing four returns solely for the fee. Other excise liabilities can change the filing picture. Start with the actual plan and obligations.
Illustration only. Not every health plan or employer owes the fee. Do not apply PCORI timing or payment rules to other excise taxes.

Direct Answers. Informed Decisions.
No. It is a federal excise-tax return for the taxes listed on the form. State sales and use taxes have their own returns and rules. One filing does not automatically satisfy the other.
No. Filing depends on liability for, or responsibility for collecting, the excise taxes covered by the form and the applicable continuation rules. Identify the actual activity before assuming a requirement or an exemption.
Not necessarily. Certain excise taxes require deposits during the quarter. Other taxes or fees follow different payment rules. Review the applicable IRS tax number and deposit schedule.
A business filing Form 720 only to report the patient-centered outcomes research fee generally reports that fee on the second-quarter return. Other excise liabilities can create additional filing obligations. Confirm who is responsible for the fee and the applicable plan year.
Form 720-X may be the appropriate amended return for certain corrections, while some claims follow a different procedure. Identify the tax, transaction and earlier filings before deciding where to report the adjustment.
No. Heavy highway vehicle use tax is generally reported on Form 2290. Fuel-related excise claims can involve other forms, including Form 8849. The business may need more than one of these forms for different reasons.
Describe the business activity, the tax or fee involved, the quarter and any notice or deadline. Keep sensitive tax identifiers and detailed records for the firm’s secure collection process. Any filing or research is separately engaged.
The general quarterly dates are April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31 for the preceding quarter, adjusted for weekends and legal holidays. Special taxes and fees have their own rules. Confirm the actual tax and any applicable relief.
No. A PCORI fee concerns specified health insurance policies and applicable self-insured health plans and is reported on Form 720. Form 5500 has a separate employee-benefit-plan reporting purpose. One does not replace the other.
No. Registration, transaction eligibility and any required exemption certificates or statements are separate requirements. Keep evidence for the actual sale or use; a registration number alone is not a blanket tax exemption.
Do not assume so. Credits and adjustments require the right tax, claimant, period and procedure. Review prior claims and deposits before reducing a current liability or requesting a separate refund.
Retain transaction dates, amounts or taxable quantities, the applicable tax category, exemption support and payment confirmations. Reconcile the records by period so a quarterly total can be explained.
No. The free prerecorded initial consultation is open without buying the Guide or booking a paid hour. Book ownership is optional for preparation and required for Tax Advisory. Excise preparation, research, registration assistance and other returns are separately scoped.
